In England and Wales for example, charitable trusts are a form of express trust dedicated, they say, to charitable goals. However, there are a variety of advantages to charitable trust status, including exception from most forms of tax and freedom for the trustees not found in other types of English trust.

Applicable charitable purposes are normally divided into four categories- trusts for the relief of poverty, trusts for the promotion of education, trusts for the promotion of religion and all other types of trust recognised by the law, which includes trusts for the benefit of animals and a locality. There is also a requirement that the trust’s purposes benefit the public (or some section of the public), and not simply a group of private individuals- although that being said, private individuals may benefit( immensely) from the charitable trust depending on how much profit is made – and where that charitable trust is investing its time and energy.

For example: a charitable trust going to work in Mumbai for a school may not make as much profit as a charitable trust going to work for a private school in Kuwait – although it could be argued that education ( and charity) is much more needed in  India than the oil rich Gulf State…..

One could also argue that huge salaries earned by charitable trust workers seem to defeat the purpose of the exercise…..From time to time charitable trusts may decide to apply for funding to assist with the operation of their organisation. There are many organisations who may be able to assist with funding, each with different criteria to meet. this could be viewed slightly cynically when you learn that some charitable trusts, in New Zealand for example, made up to $40million profit in 2010.

So Kuwaiti businessmen, don’t be fooled into a false sense of philanthropy when a Charitable trust comes knocking on your door, with offers to help improve your business- and all ‘in a good cause’….that good cause may be no more than filing thinner tax returns.

You should also ask yourselves why you are paying for a service where the net surplus profits are ‘ploughed back’ into another country’s economy……shouldn’t your money be going back into your own economy?

Cognition Education- an offshoot of the New Zealand based ‘charitable trust’ Multi Serve  have undertaken  a project in Kuwait to ‘improve practices’ in three private schools owned by Alinmaa Education. Did you hear this ministry? with the elections coming up next week maybe it’s time to clean up house?

A recent arrival on their team is Kathryn Hodson, visiting from New Zealand-Principal Consultant – QAA & Training.

My simple question(s) to the Ministry of Education, Kuwait and the Ministry of Interior are:

1) Can people in Kuwait on visit visas enter classrooms to observe students and teachers and write reports

( unaccompanied or sanctioned by the Ministry) ? I mean, could my aunt do it? She’s coming next week.

2) Does Ms Hodson have permission from the Ministry to undertake such ‘work’ on presumably a ‘visit’ visa ( she is here for only two weeks) – was this declared on her entrance visa when she entered the country last week?

3) Can teachers be observed and evaluated by visitors from abroad, who have no work permits for Kuwait?

4) Is the Ministry going to investigate this?

5) Does this merit investigation?

Your response would be gladly appreciated- as I assume the Ministry of Education Kuwait, who adhere to such strict standards ( such as interviews, degree attestation etc etc)  when permitting teachers to work legally in private schools here, would operate those same strict standards for visitors in classrooms writing reports…. after all, any Tom, Dick or Harriette could be entering our children’s clsssrooms, couldn’t they?

Interestingly on one of their websites Cognition say ”Cognition works with the government in Qatar and Abu Dhabi and with private education providers in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.”

That sounds to me like the government in Kuwait aren’t involved in this particular ‘mission’.

The latest horror to unfold is that of Monique Amin on Big Brother Brasil, who was raped as she slept ( in a comatose drink inspired stupor)- raped by a fellow contestant Daniel Echaniz, who slipped into her bed and attacked her as she lay unconscious. I don’t know who he thought wasn’t watching, apart from the world perhaps, but the cameras caught it all.

If it is real, it is horrific to watch- don’t watch it.

Model Daniel Echaniz was expelled from the Big Brother house after being accused of taking advantage of rival Monique Amin following a boozy party. Fans campaigned for him to be kicked off the show after he was filmed grinding his hips into Ms Amin under her bedsheets.She had passed out drunk on the bed. Throughout the incident the female contestant appeared unconscious.Police turned up at the house to interview the pair before TV bosses sent Daniel 31, home for “serious misbehaviour.”

Yes, rape is pretty damned ‘serious’.

As the scandal began to engulf the show,  police officers arrived at the house and interviewed Ms Amin for three hours, before taking her away for a rape examination. When interviewed the next morning, she appeared to remember nothing about the incident at all.

Logically I suppose, if you only get a fixed amount of luggage weight, perhaps there should be a fixed weight allowance for the actual passenger? And anyone over weight should pay more ( for a bigger seat)? That’s the argument…..

Well- how many times have you sat next to a weeble spilling over into your small space while flying 6 hours + on a flight from Kuwait?

Tony Webber, a former Qantas economist is advocating that passengers pay a ‘fat tax’….apparently airlines are now paying more for fuel because the average weight of the population, as well as their luggage, has increased.

Mmmm but what about pregnant women? So is this a sexist idea?
